What is Water Damage

Water DamageWater damage can result from a number of sources. Everyday household issues, such as broken dishwasher hoses, roof leaks, or cracks in the foundation of your house can become a source for water that penetrates into your house. Major natural disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy, can also devastate your house and create a need for water damage restoration.

There are several classes defining what water damage is, from slow rate evaporation that damages only a small portion of the materials of a house to fast rate evaporation that affects entire areas of a property or the entire property. Each of these levels of damage involve expert level treatment, including disposal and reconstruction in order to ensure that mold damage doesn’t result from water left behind. There are also different categories that define the level of contamination in the water that has leaked out.

Category 1: Clean Water Damage

Clean water is water that leaks from sanitary sources such as sinks, bathtubs, or rain and melting snow. This water has been sitting still for 24 hours or less and therefore uncontaminated. If left untreated though, this water will begin to contaminate, so immediate clean up is necessary.

Category 2: Grey Water Damage

Grey water is generally overflow or overhead water. This can come from toilet bowls, roofs, ceilings, or a number of other sources. This water is unsafe for consumption or contact and has been sitting still for more than 24 hours. It is recognizable by its apparent odor.

Category 3: Black Water Damage

Black water is highly unsafe and can be toxic if consumed or come into contact with. This often comes from raw sewage, or basement flooding. This water has been sitting for 72 hours of more. Evacuation is often necessary for this category of water damage, as mold damage can occur due to it.
